Your Role
As Geotechnical Superintendent, you play a vital role in ensuring quality-assured geotechnical data collection, directly contributing to the safety of LKAB’s Kiruna mine. Reporting to the Section Leader for Rock Engineering, you oversee all geotechnical logging and drilling programs, providing critical data for mine design, infrastructure placement, instrumentation plans, and subsidence prognoses.
The core logging is carried out in a modern, large-scale and well-equipped facility right in Kiruna´s new city centre (“Malmhuset”). The importance for geotechnical data collection and its active use and benefits has been increasingly recognized in recent years. The facility is currently being reorganised to become LKAB’s “geotechnical hub” in Kiruna.
You will regularly visit underground and surface drill sites, ensuring high-quality drilling through active feedback. Your work is supported by established procedures and experienced colleagues from various departments, while logging and drilling are carried out by a skilled, multi-national team of contractors.
As Geotechnical Superintendent, you oversee coreshed activities, including:
Acting as LKAB´s representative to supervise the work of 15+ logging geologists
Managing logistics, task prioritization, QA/QC, logging rates, and equipment maintenance.
Handling purchases and invoices for logging/drilling.
Optimizing workflows for efficiency.
Ensuring core quality through contractor visits and feedback.
and advise the core logging and drilling teams follow SOPs.
Maintaining a safe work environment.
What you bring
We are looking for a senior geologist with experience managing large teams and drilling programs. The ideal candidate will be structured, able to organize and manage inputs from various stakeholders. You will have strong teamwork skills, collaborating with international contractors, and the ability to communicate effectively across different teams. Additionally, you will be expected to mentor and coach others, particularly new graduates, and ensure a safe work environment for all involved.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in preferably geotechnical engineering, or related branches like geology, mining engineering and/or earth sciences
Demonstrated leadership and mentorship experience for core logging teams
Minimum 3 years years hands-on experience with core logging
Proven expertise in management of drill programs and different drilling techniques
Experience working in a multicultural environment (e.g., international teams or cross-border projects).
Fluency in English is required. Swedish proficiency is a plus.
A valid driver’s license equivalent to Swedish Class B.
