LKAB has taken a leading role in shaping the modern mines of the future, where we already produce the world’s most climate-efficient iron ore pellets. But we aim even higher. Our goal is to transition from coal and oil to carbon-free electricity and hydrogen. Fossil-free fuels are an important step on the path toward full climate neutrality.
To support this transition, we are now looking for a Senior Process Safety Engineer who will take a leading role in shaping gas and hydrogen safety across LKAB’s projects and operations.
Shaping the future
At LKAB, we are leading the transformation of our industry toward a sustainable future. Just as we aim to reshape the world, we are committed to developing every individual on our team, both personally and professionally. Are you ready to help shape the future of the mining and mineral industry?
Your role
In this role as a Senior Process safety engineer – Gas infrastructure, you will build and coordinate expertise in gas safety at the business area level, with focus on hydrogen but including other gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and methane.
You will be a key resource supporting both project and operations teams in safety-related work—from early stages of development projects to ongoing support in our facilities.
You will work with issues related to the introduction and use of gases, follow up on safety deliverables in projects, and ensure alignment with our internal standards. You will also monitor relevant regulatory requirements and standards, and actively participate in both internal and external networks.
This position offers the opportunity to influence safety solutions for industrial hydrogen infrastructure in an environment where few large-scale reference projects exist today.
Key responsibilities:
-
Lead safety work for gas and hydrogen infrastructure projects
-
Conduct and coordinate ATEX classifications and risk assessments
-
Evaluate safety system design and compliance with standards
-
Support operations during inspections and audits
-
Participate in internal and external expert networks
The production technology department has recently established the Energy & Hydrogen section, with the aim of building the expertise needed to drive LKAB’s transformation. We are leaving traditional methods behind and investing in a fossil-free future—where the ultimate goal is to produce iron using hydrogen instead of coal.
This position is based in Kiruna, Gällivare, Luleå, Narvik or Stockholm and travel to our operating sites is a natural part of the role.
What you bring
You are an experienced safety or process engineer who is confident taking ownership and leading technical discussions. You enjoy working in developing environments where new solutions are being shaped, and you combine structured ways of working with a collaborative mindset.
To succeed in this role, we believe you have:
- A university degree, preferably at the master’s level or equivalent
- Strong communication skills and experience working in cross-functional teams
- Excellent proficiency in English; if you are not yet fluent in Swedish, you have a strong willingness to learn the language
- A valid driver’s license (required for all positions at LKAB)
You also bring several years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Working with safety issues related to combustible gases
- Inspection, construction, or design of gas systems
- Understanding of risks and consequences such as flame behavior
- Knowledge of the limitations and placement of hydrogen sensors
- Experience working with standards and regulations, and the ability to interpret and apply them in practice
What we offer
In addition to the general benefits we offer—which you can find a bit further down—we can also offer you, who currently do not live in Sweden, the following:
- Relocation support for you and your family.
- Excellent conditions for settling in. We guide you through the official procedures necessary to settle in the country if you come from outside Sweden. We also provide temporary accommodation for a reasonable period and help you find a permanent place to live according to your personal needs.
- LKAB helps you learn Swedish, a tool for a better understanding of Swedish culture.
- The Swedish vacation law entitles all employees to five weeks of vacation per year, and four consecutive weeks during June, July, or August. Your contract may include extra vacation days.
