In Sweden's northernmost city we have been mining in Kiirunavaara since the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is the world's largest underground mine for iron ore. The city's history has always been shaped by our mining operations, and the ongoing urban transformation is part of this long story – the expansion of the ore body has been known for a long time. In Kiruna we're also exploring the new deposit Per Geijer, an iron ore deposit that contains high levels of phosphorus and is one of Europe's largest known deposits of rare earth elements.
The new city center has been inaugurated and the church has moved to its new location; the old city center has been dismantled and people and businesses have moved. Although we have made significant progress, there are still many years of urban transformation left in Kiruna.
