Pioneering facility for sponge iron in Gällivare

In northern Sweden, a revolution is taking shape. LKAB and Gällivare, a place with a long history of mining operations, are now at the center of the industry's transition towards a sustainable future.

Together with Vattenfall and SSAB, we have been running HYBRIT since 2016, an initiative with the aim of creating a completely fossil-free value chain from the mine to finished steel – both a huge technological advance and a vision of a sustainable future for the iron and steel industry. This is not just a local matter: it will have a major impact on Norrbotten, Sweden and the entire global mining industry.

Next up: Demonstration plant

Now we’re taking the next step, with the construction of a first production facility for carbon dioxide-free sponge iron at our industrial area in Malmberget. By using hydrogen from renewable energy instead of coal in the process, carbon dioxide emissions can be practically eliminated.

Support from the EU and the Swedish Energy Agency

The HYBRIT initiative, and the construction of the demonstration plant, has received support from the EU's innovation fund, CINEA, as well as Industriklivet, the Swedish Energy Agency's program to support the transformation of Swedish industry.

Permits a key

A prerequisite for the transformation in Gällivare and Malmberget to be successful is that we get a new environmental permit. Right now, the process for a new permit for our operation is underway.

Towards a sustainable future

Carbon dioxide-free sponge iron is just one aspect of our green transition.
