A new digital safety solution becomes mandatory underground

Digitalization is an important part of making work in the mines easier, safer and more efficient. That is why we're introducing a new digital safety solution for the underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget. The purpose of the safety solution is to further increase safety capabilities through applications that enable faster and improved communication and positioning capabilities, for example in the event of emergencies.

The new safety solution in brief:

  • The system is already in operation and from fall 2026, the safety solution is mandatory for everyone, both internal and external employees and suppliers.
  • Everyone spending time in our underground mines must be equipped with either a mobile phone or a tag with the safety solution installed.
  • Mining tags/personal safety tags are not replaced and must still be used.
  • To gain access to the safety solution, mandatory training must be completed. After completing the training, the equipment can be picked up at LKAB’s industrial guards.

Timetable

The safety solution project was started in 2022 and has since been tested for internal employees in both the Kiruna and Malmberget mines. Starting in Q3-Q4 2026, the system will be implemented for everyone who works underground, both internal and external employees and suppliers.

The implementation takes place in connection with an application for entrance permit (new or extended) being made in the new entry application system.

Positioning, communication and navigation

The safety solution consists of the applications Virtual Tag and Pocket Mine. Virtual Tag is a digital location tag that provides both access to an improved situational picture of where people are in the mine, but also the ability to receive and acknowledge messages. Both functions can be important aids in a crisis or emergency situation, for example to be able to speed up an evacuation. In addition, there is the possibility of receiving other types of messages such as information about road maintenance, closures and other traffic information.

With Pocket Mine you get access to a digital 3D map that shows your current position and helps you navigate and find, for example, the nearest rescue chamber or gas station. Using the map, you can also see other people and vehicles nearby (without gaining access to any personal data).

All vehicles used underground in Kiruna will also be equipped with a vehicle tag to enable localisation in the event of incidents and contribute to increased traffic safety as part of the digital safety solution.

New training requirements

To gain access to the digital safety solution, everyone who works underground are required to complete the updated safety training called “Safety Underground 2.0” for Kiruna and “Escape Routes Malmberget E-learning 2.0” for Malmberget. The updated training will be available via the new entry application system and you will be informed when it is time for you to complete it. After completing the training, you will gain access to the safety solution via the industrial guard, which you will then be required to have with you during your work underground.

Questions and answers

The digital safety solution consists of the applications Virtual Tag and Pocket Mine, which provide improved positioning, communication and navigation in emergency situations, for example. A device with the applications installed is obtained through the industrial guard and is mandatory to have when working underground in the mines in Kiruna and Malmberget.

Vehicles used underground in Kiruna must also be equipped with a vehicle tag that is obtained through the industrial guard in Kiruna.
The mine tag will continue to be part of the mandatory protective equipment and should still be used every time you go into the mine, even after the introduction of the digital safety solution.
You must complete an updated safety training course (“Safety Underground 2.0” for Kiruna and “Escape Routes Malmberget E-learning 2.0” for Malmberget). After completing the training, you will receive access to the safety solution, which will then be mandatory when working underground. A device with the applications and a vehicle tag (Kiruna only) can be obtained through the industrial guard in Kiruna or Malmberget.
You contact the industrial guard in Kiruna or Malmberget to obtain a new device with the safety solution. The device with the applications is obtained through the industrial guard and is issued free of charge, but if lost or not returned after your assignment is completed, the company will be charged SEK 5,000. Vehicle tags (Kiruna only) are also issued free of charge, but if lost or not returned after the assignment is completed, the company will be charged SEK 3,000.
