Fall accident casualty
On saturday we were notified that the person who was injured due to a fall on Friday has died.
“Today, our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the woman who died as a result of injuries sustained due to a fall,” says Magnus Arnkvist, Senior Vice President, Southern Division, of which the Svappavaara operation is a part.
“A work-related casualty is the worse that can happen to us at LKAB. The purpose of our Safety First effort is to ensure that everyone can return home safe and healthy at the end of the work day. Therefore, a casualty is a major failure on our part, and LKAB must participate fully in an investigation of the accident concurrently with our own investigations to ensure that a similar incident never occurs again,” says President and CEO Jan Moström.
The incident:
Just before 10.30 a.m. on Friday 27th July a serious accident occurred in the Svappavaara pelletizing plant. The injured person was rushed to Umeå, where she later died as a result of injuries.
At 10.30 on Friday morning, emergency services were notified of a serious fall accident at the pelletizing plant. An employee of one of LKAB’s contractors was doing preparatory work on a gantry in the balling area of the pelletizing plant when grating on the service platform failed. The co-worker fell about five metres and landed on a belt conveyor. A colleague summoned personnel immediately and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated. This was continued until ambulance personnel arrived on the scene and took over. The woman was transported by helicopter to Gällivare Hospital and was taken later during the evening to Umeå University Hospital. The area was cordoned off, a crisis organization was established and the police were on site.
