Ground deformations
Mining creates movements in the rock, and affects the environment, below and above ground, in the form of ground deformations.
As we mine iron ore under ground, cavities appear in the rock. These cavities are plugged by waste rock – the more ore we mine, the more the rock above sinks. This affects the ground surface and ground deformations occur.
Ground deformations are measured
We have hundreds of measuring tools deployed in both Malmberget and Kiruna: Instruments that measure vibrations and movements in the ground, and are used to give us the best and most accurate data possible. Below is the location of measuring terminals in Kiruna.
