LKAB is building a new sorting plant at the Malmberget mine – an investment of about SEK six billion. It's one of the largest industrial projects in Gällivare in modern times, and when it's finished in 2028, will ay the foundation for stable and competitive production for many years to come.
The new facility is designed to handle 24 million tonnes of magnetite ore and one million tonnes of hematite ore per year.
The modern design ensures a significantly more stable and predictable process. The new plant will also be able to handle varying quality in raw materials with high efficiency, something that impacts capacity at the current plant.
This initiative represents a crucial step toward sustainable, efficient, and future-proof mining operations in Malmberget.
The existing sorting plant in Malmberget has served LKAB well for over 70 years, dating back to the 1950s. Now, however, it is time for something new: due to its age, the facility has required extensive and costly maintenance, while limited space has impacted the work environment and hampered daily operations. The new facility offers significant benefits for both employees and the surrounding environment.
Sorting, somtimes known as screening, is the first step in processing raw ore into finished fines and pellet products. Here, the ore is crushed and screened to the appropriate size. At the same time, the valuable ore is separated from waste rock through magnetic separation in preparation for the next stage of the process: concentrating.
The new sorting plant can handle 24 million tonnes of magnetite ore and one million tonnes of hematite per year.
The project is an investment of approximately six billion SEK.
The new sorting plant is expected to be up and running by 2028.
