David Högnelid appointed Vice President Minerals at LKAB
International mining and minerals group, LKAB, are pleased to announce the appointment of David Högnelid as Vice President Minerals, effective immediately.
“David joined LKAB in 2012 and has held several senior leadership roles, most recently as Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer for Business Area Special Products. David has been an invaluable member of the senior management team, with his in-depth knowledge of the minerals markets and complex value chains. I’m confident David will deliver our ambition to grow the business and become market leaders in responsible mineral production,” says Darren Wilson, Senior Vice President, Business Area Special Products.
The Minerals division has a key role to play in LKAB’s ongoing transformation, by growing external sales in the industrial minerals market with both existing products and future critical minerals production. Phosphorous and Rare Earth Elements can be extracted from today’s mine waste and will become an integral part of the future business.
“I am excited to take on this new role, to lead our international minerals business. Minerals are the start of virtually every value chain. And at LKAB, we serve customers around the world in a broad range of markets and uses with a portfolio of more than 30 mineral products, engineered for everything from energy production, water treatment, and construction to agriculture,” says David Högnelid.
As a responsible mineral supplier, LKAB already has a strong focus on maximising material efficiency by processing existing side streams or by-products. In 2023, 45 percent of mineral sales were from secondary products, such as Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag, a by-product of the steel making process used as a cement alternative, contributing to increased material efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the Minerals division is also responsible for value-added sales of iron ore into non-steel applications, direct from LKAB’s mines in Northern Sweden.
“When we realise our plans to extract Rare Earth Elements and Phosphorus from our mine waste in the future, we will add critical raw materials to our portfolio. This places LKAB in the midst of the green transformation as well as playing an important role for European security and resilience. With the experienced, innovative and business oriented team in the minerals division, we will look to build strong value chains and partnerships to continue the growth of the business in the years to come,” says David Högnelid.
The minerals division employs 360 people in 11 countries with a turnover of 391 MEURO in 2023.
