Gällivare: innovation and nature in perfect harmony

Welcome to Gällivare, home of our Malmberget mine! Here's where our transformation begins, with the construction of a first production plant for carbon dioxide-free sponge iron and the electrication of the mine itself. Large-scale mining has been going here since the late 1880s and today, we’re proud to keep this legacy going. With stunning natural surroundings and a rich cultural life, Gällivare is also a gem for outdoor enthusiasts.

The transformation begins here

By 2045, we plan for all our processes and products to be carbon dioxide-free, and it all starts in Malmberget. Preparations for the transformation are already in progress and plans for the future industrial area are being finalised.

Alexander Cooke and Anna Hynynen are two of those who have taken the step and moved to Gällivare, one from England and the other from southern Sweden. What they both have in common is a great interest in outdoor activities, as well as a fascination with mountains and mines, and a strong desire to work for something greater – to contribute to the green transition.

From the mountain, more than a 1,000 meters below the surface, iron ore is extracted, ultimately becoming high-quality steel that builds our society. The journey involves drilling, blasting, and loading in the mine, followed by sorting, enrichment, and pelletising in our processing plants above ground, before finally being transported by train on the Malmbanan and by boat from the port in Luleå out into the world.

Two towns becoming one

For over half a century, Malmberget has been going through an urban transformation. At present, Malmberget is being phased out, some of it being demolished and other parts relocated, while the twin town of Gällivare is expanding. Although it's not an easy process, it's crucial for mining to continue.
