July 14, 2025

LKAB's board of directors has decided to appoint Johan Menckel as the new CEO and Group CEO of LKAB. He most recently came from the role of Vice President and Investment Manager for Latour AB and has extensive experience from industrial companies, including as CEO of Gränges AB for many years.

Johan Menckel will take up the position as new CEO in the first half of 2026. He also today sits on a number of boards, including Saab AB and Securitas AB. Jan Moström, who turns 67 next year, will remain in the CEO role until Johan Menckel takes over.

“It has been extensive work that has led to our appointment of Johan Menckel as the new CEO of LKAB. With his industry experience, I am convinced that Johan is the right person to take over and develop the very strong position that LKAB has acquired under Jan Moström’s leadership over the past decade,” says LKAB’s Chairman of the Board Anders Borg

“I am grateful to have the chance to lead LKAB in these times. LKAB is not only an engine for northern Sweden but also has a strong position and can play a decisive role in a number of industrial value chains in Europe that need to be developed both to meet the climate threat and increase self-sufficiency”, says Johan Menckel.

In recent years, LKAB has pursued significant development projects for the transition to carbon-free processes and products, as well as increased resource utilization with the extraction of rare earth metals and phosphorus. The company has significantly increased its mineral resources, which can enable continued mining operations for a long time to come. At the same time, great progress has been made with the continued urban transformation in Kiruna and Gällivare.

“The years ahead will be crucial for LKAB, where we need to ensure production stability and ongoing profitability in order to step by step be able to take advantage of the opportunities we see with investments in increased mining production and new products such as sponge iron, phosphorus and rare earth metals”, says Anders Borg.

Johan Menckel is 54 years old, holds a Master of Science in Engineering from KTH, is married and has four children. He will be placed at LKAB’s head office in Luleå.
