Ever since its inception in 1890, LKAB's existence and development have been dependent on the ability to create value for, and grow together with, communities; we create jobs, develop and continue to be an active part of the communities in Gällivare and Kiruna, while contributing positively to economic development both regionally and for Sweden.

If we are to continue to mine world-class iron ore, parts of Kiruna and Malmberget must now be relocated and decommissioned. It is not an easy process, but it is important to remember that the urban transformations are an important piece of a larger puzzle. Our ambition is to facilitate the change as much as possible and compensate for the direct effect that the urban transformations have on those affected.
LKAB's mining operations in Kiruna and Malmberget are crucial to the development of the region, but now parts of these communities must be relocated in order for us to continue. It is a comprehensive change that we are implementing with responsibility, consideration and in close collaboration with the local population.
As a wholly state-owned company with a strong history and local ties, there is an even greater demand on us to manage the urban transformations in a sustainable way. It is a challenge for everyone involved – our dialogue with the outside world is crucial – and in consultation with municipalities, residents, landowners, authorities and others, we work to ensure that the changes take place with security and faith in the future.
Before LKAB is granted permission to mine ore in an area, the municipalities must change the detailed plans from residential and commercial areas to industrial areas. This in turn requires that LKAB succeeds in reaching agreements with all property owners and businesses that must move. One of the most important tasks for LKAB’s urban transformation organisation is therefore to purchase properties, partly from the municipality and partly from private individuals.
LKAB is financing the entire transformation in accordance with the Minerals Act and is working closely with municipalities and authorities to ensure a fair and smooth change. Together, time schedules have been established and then it is the municipalities that decide what the new communities will look like. Through long-term responsibility and collaboration, we are building a sustainable future for everyone involved.
Valuable buildings are moved to preserve history and identity. We also create green environmental zones that smooth the transition between the mining area and the buildings.
LKAB is part of the community and therefore it is obvious that we take our environmental, social and economic responsibility. Today we call it sustainability – something we have been dedicated to for more than 130 years.
As it should be. To continue mining ore, LKAB must secure access to the land that mining affects, through environmental permits and agreements with municipalities and property owners. The development of LKAB, Kiruna and Gällivare requires close collaboration with many parties.
