Large mining conference in Kiruna seeks solutions for the world’s mineral needs

The subject of the conference is large-scale cave mining, a method used in the Kiruna mine.

This year, LKAB is the organizer of the Massmin conference together with Luleå University of Technology. Hundreds of mining experts gather in Kiruna September 14-19.

The world’s need for metals and minerals continues to grow, not least as a result of the climate crisis and the green transition required to reduce the dependance on fossil fuels. At the same time, the mining companies are faced with extraction at greater depths, and refining deposits with lower concentrations.

“The mining industry solving these challenges is a key both to maintaining and increasing welfare for more people around the world, and for us to be able to change to a more sustainable society. That’s why it’s with great joy we are able to welcome so many of the leading experts in several different mining technical fields to Kiruna”, says Jenny Greberg, Vice President for Technology at LKAB.

The conference is an opportunity to exchange experiences and is visited by experts in mass mining. The meeting is organized every four years and over 150 scientific articles have been submitted by authors from 18 countries.
